Returns to Chile Atacama Solar Race.

The Atacama Solar Race, Latin America’s sun-powered automotive rally, is preparing its 2016 edition in an effort to bring alternative energy to Chile’s northern region, organizers said.

This is the fourth year that La Ruta Solar, a non-governmental organization, is organizing the race.

La Ruta Solar uses the Atacama Solar Race to promote solar culture among residents with innovative and attractive features.

“In Antofagasta region, we will have start and finish lines inside the city so the community will be able to see the vehicles, learn about their operation and see how they use solar energy to move,” event coordinator Camila Cortinez said.

This year’s rally will be used to promote the development of low-cost hybrid vehicles that can be produced in different cities in the Americas.

The race cars will travel through three Chilean regions, covering 900 kilometers (559 miles) more than in the Atacama Solar Race’s previous edition.

The April 21-27 competition will take place in Tarapaca, Antofagasta and, for the first time, Atacama region.

The Atacama Solar Race is the first competition for sun-powered vehicles in Latin America and crosses the Atacama Desert, the most arid place in the world, with 105,000 sq. kilometers (40,540 sq. miles) of striking geography and the world’s highest levels of solar radiation.
