Mexico: Spain’s Acciona wins contract to build Power Plant.

Spain’s Acciona said Monday it won a $107 million contract from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to design, build and oversee the start of operations of the Baja California Sur V thermal power plant in Mexico.

The power plant in La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur state, will have a net generating capacity of 46.8 MW and is expected to be completed in June 2016, Acciona said in a statement.

The contract calls for the expansion of an existing power plant whose first four phases are already in operation.

The power plant provides electricity to La Paz and nearby tourist areas, meeting the energy needs of some 200,000 residents.

The energy facility generates electricity by burning petroleum residues, thus “optimizing the crude oil cycle,” Acciona said.

Acciona is the largest producer of energy from renewable sources in Mexico with 556.5 MW of installed wind generating capacity, or 28 percent of the country’s total.
