Brazil: motor vehicle production falls 18.2%

Brazil’s auto industry produced 216,465 units last month, down 3.5 percent from July and 18.2 percent from August 2014, the National Association of Car Manufacturers, or Anfavea, said Friday.

Output for the first eight months of 2015 fell 16.9 percent compared with the same period last year to 1.73 million vehicles.

Anfavea president Luiz Moan said the August decrease was due, in part, to excess inventory at dealerships and he forecast that production would remain restricted in September and October for the same reason.

Sales of new vehicles in Brazil fell 23.92 percent last month compared with August 2014, according to data released Wednesday by the National Federation of Automotive Distributors.

The monthly decline was 8.94 percent.

Sales over the first eight months of this year totaled 1.75 million units, down 21.35 percent from the same period in 2014, the federation said.

Market conditions in Brazil remain “quite difficult,” Moan said, especially in the truck segment, where sales are down 40 percent.

Exports, conversely, climbed 21.9 percent from July to August, with 34,600 vehicles shipped abroad, and are up 10.5 percent for 2015 over the same period last year.

The Brazilian auto industry employed 134,312 workers last month, a 9.8 percent reduction from 12 months earlier.

Latin America’s largest economy is struggling with recession and rising inflation and the crucial auto sector has suffered.
